Ruchika's Story
I still remember my first blood donation in college. I was nervous. Everyone kept saying things like “You’ll faint!” or “It hurts a lot!” and honestly, my heart was racing just thinking about it.
But my parents encouraged me and seeing all my friends participate gave me the push I needed. Standing in line, I watched everyone fidget nervously and try to act brave. I felt a mix of fear and excitement.
When it was my turn, the staff was calm and reassuring. They explained every step, checked my vitals carefully and made sure I was comfortable. The needle barely stung and before I knew it, the donation was over. I didn’t faint, I didn’t panic. Just a quiet, surprising sense of pride that I had actually done it.
Afterwards, we all sat together, sipping juice and eating Parle-G biscuits, laughing about how scared we had been. Those little moments made it feel less intimidating and more like a shared experience.
Back then, my college gave a “gold card” to students who donated three times. It felt like a badge of honor and everyone noticed it. I had managed to donate twice, but in the third year, I couldn’t participate because I had a mild fever at the time. I was genuinely disappointed as I had really been looking forward to the card.
Now, years later, I realise the card never mattered. What mattered was showing up and helping others. That small act could mean the world to someone in need. And I’ve realised something important, whenever you want to help the community, the best service for mankind is to donate blood.
