Kanishk Chauhan's Story
I never planned to donate blood. In fact, before college, it had never even crossed my mind.
Then one day, a blood donation camp appeared on campus. Posters, volunteers, announcements, all encouraging students to participate. I had just turned 18 that year, and something inside me said, “Why not?” Not confidence. Not courage. Just curiosity.
That curiosity quickly turned into nervous excitement.
I remember calling multiple family members, asking the same questions again and again. How much blood do they take? Is it safe? What should I do before and after? I even consulted a doctor. I wasn’t afraid of needles, but I was afraid of doing something important without fully understanding it. There were too many unknowns, and my mind kept running ahead of me.
Inside the donation hall, reality hit. People were lying down, holding stress balls, smiling nervously. My heart started racing. “This suddenly feels very real,” I thought. When I was asked to lie down and saw the donation needle — thicker than anything I had seen before — I paused. “That’s going inside me?”
Still, the process was calm. Smooth. Almost reassuring. As the machine hummed beside me, my heartbeat slowed. Somewhere in that quiet moment, a new thought surfaced: “This blood might actually help someone.” That realization changed everything.
Afterwards, I followed every instruction seriously. I rested, ate properly, and gave my body time to recover. There was mild soreness in my arm — nothing alarming, just a reminder of what I’d done. Within a day, I felt completely normal again. A few days later, I received my report — and a surprise. My blood group wasn’t A positive, as I had believed all my life. It was AB positive. Rare. Valuable. That discovery stayed with me.
Since then, I’ve donated blood whenever I could. Not perfectly. Not every three months. But intentionally. My first donation wasn’t just about giving blood. It was about stepping into the unknown, choosing to act anyway, and realizing that sometimes, one small decision can quietly turn into a lifelong habit.
