Plasma-derived medicines: For industrial fractionation — where plasma from thousands of donors is pooled to manufacture IVIg, albumin, and factor concentrates — AB plasma contributes to the same pool as all other types. There is no fractionation advantage specific to AB, but every unit matters.
AB-negative donors have the rarest and most universally applicable blood in the system:
AB-negative donors represent less than 1% of India's population — a fraction of a fraction. Blood banks actively seek AB-negative registered donors for their registry, because when an AB-negative patient needs red blood cells (which can only be given from AB-negative or O-negative donors), or when emergency plasma is needed for an Rh-negative patient, AB-negative is the safest choice.

Some individuals who test as AB through routine ABO typing may warrant additional testing if they are of South Asian descent — because the Bombay blood group (hh phenotype), which is almost exclusively found in India (1 in 10,000), can initially appear similar to type O or occasionally be miscategorised. The Bombay group is determined by extended testing beyond routine ABO and Rh.
