Platelets in New Delhi — FAQs

Platelets have only a 5-day shelf life — the shortest of any blood product. Demand spikes during dengue season (typically July–November in north India) and around cancer treatment schedules. Most blood banks rely on directed donation from family or apheresis donors.
Random Donor Platelets (RDP) are pooled from 4–6 whole-blood donations. Single Donor Platelets (SDP) come from one apheresis donor and contain 6–8× the platelet count in a single unit, with lower infection risk. For dengue and cancer patients, doctors often prescribe SDP.
Yes, if your platelet count is at least 1.5 lakh/µL and you weigh 50+ kg, you can give SDP by apheresis at an equipped blood centre. The process takes 90 minutes and you can donate every 14 days (maximum 24 times a year).
Government blood banks charge approximately ₹8,500 per SDP unit (regulated rate). Private centres charge more. Many New Delhi centres waive the fee if you bring a replacement donor.
RML, LNJP, Sir Ganga Ram, and Lady Hardinge operate 24×7 emergency blood services. Indian Red Cross Society HQ has limited night hours — call before visiting after 8 PM.
Indian Red Cross Society, 1 Red Cross Road, near Parliament Street. They run regular voluntary camps and maintain one of India's longest-running voluntary donor registries.
Government blood banks waive the processing fee for railway accident victims, BPL patients, thalassaemia, sickle cell, and certain government employees with valid documentation. Always carry ID and any relevant cards.
