PRBC in New Delhi — FAQs

Thalassaemia patients receive monthly PRBC transfusions for life. Cancer patients on chemotherapy, dialysis patients, women with severe postpartum bleeding, and surgical patients also routinely need PRBC. New Delhi's blood banks supply these regularly.
Not directly through standard whole-blood donation — your unit is separated into PRBC + plasma + platelets at the blood bank. Through apheresis (double-red-cell donation) you can give two units of red cells in one visit. Apheresis donation has a longer cooldown (168 days).
Government blood banks across India charge a fixed processing fee of approximately ₹1,100 per unit of PRBC, regulated by the National Blood Transfusion Council. Thalassaemia, Sickle Cell, BPL, and certain other categories are exempt from the fee.
Most government blood banks in New Delhi operate round the clock for emergencies. For elective transfusions, blood is usually issued during day hours after cross-matching, which takes 1–2 hours.
RML, LNJP, Sir Ganga Ram, and Lady Hardinge operate 24×7 emergency blood services. Indian Red Cross Society HQ has limited night hours — call before visiting after 8 PM.
Indian Red Cross Society, 1 Red Cross Road, near Parliament Street. They run regular voluntary camps and maintain one of India's longest-running voluntary donor registries.
Government blood banks waive the processing fee for railway accident victims, BPL patients, thalassaemia, sickle cell, and certain government employees with valid documentation. Always carry ID and any relevant cards.
