Description
A joyful moment of childbirth turned into a heartbreaking tragedy for Divya’s family. During a medical emergency after delivery, the urgent need for blood and plasma showed her how precious timely donation is, and how every decision in those critical hours can change a life forever.
Divya Srivastava's Story
In 2016, my twin sister was nine months pregnant and admitted to a hospital in Agra for delivery. The doctor initially tried for a normal delivery for several hours, but when her condition became unstable, the gynaecologist decided to perform an emergency C-section. She gave birth to a healthy baby boy, and for a brief moment, our family felt immense happiness.
Sadly, that happiness did not last long.
Soon after the delivery, she developed continuous internal bleeding and her condition became critical. The doctors later diagnosed her with HELLP syndrome, a life-threatening complication during pregnancy. Her health deteriorated rapidly, and she needed advanced treatment. My family wanted to shift her immediately to Apollo Hospital for better care, but there were delays from her husband’s family in decision-making, and precious time was lost.
As her condition worsened, the doctors said she urgently needed A+ blood transfusion. It was a nightmare for all of us. My parents and I immediately decided to donate blood, and we also started reaching out to relatives for additional units. At that time, I was in Bangalore with my husband and could not reach Agra immediately, which made the helplessness even more painful.
My father and brother donated blood first, while other family members who were eligible were also prepared to help. But soon the doctors informed us that her condition had become even more critical, and she now urgently needed blood plasma. Hearing those words terrified our entire family. We were desperately trying to do everything possible to save her. Our family members donated blood so that the blood bank could arrange the required plasma in exchange. The plasma transfusion was started in the hope that it would stabilize her condition. But by then, too much time had already passed. She had suffered excessive internal bleeding throughout the night, and proper medical intervention had been delayed for more than twelve hours after the surgery.
Even today, this remains one of the most painful memories of my life.
If the right decisions had been taken at the right time, and if proper treatment along with blood transfusion had been arranged earlier, her life might have been saved. After fighting for nearly one and a half days, she passed away while being shifted to Delhi in an ICU ambulance. Somewhere near Greater Noida, on the way to the hospital that could have treated her, we lost her forever.
That tragedy taught our family a lesson we can never forget. Blood can be needed by anyone, at any time, without warning. In critical moments, even a single unit of blood can make the difference between life and death. Blood donation is not just an act of kindness; it is a chance to save someone’s loved one, someone’s entire world. We should never delay when someone is in need. The right help, at the right time, can save a precious life.
